10th Anniversary Celebration of United Nations Day of Vesak
Theme: Education and Global Citizenship: A Buddhist Perspective
Venue: UN Convention Center Bangkok and
Buddhamonthon, Nakhornpathom Province, Thailand

Objectives

• To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of UN Day of Vesak and auspicious the Celebration of the 100th Birthday Anniversary of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand
• To work and cooperate among Buddhist communities and institutions to foster cooperation and friendship with each other at the national and international levels, in accordance with government policy
• To cooperate and introduce Buddhist Perspective on Global Recovery • To collaborate and disseminate Buddhism through academic activities, religious ceremonies and ways of life.

Background
In December BE 2542, the General Assembly of the United Nations, at its fifty-fourth session (Agenda Item 174), recognized the Day of Vesak as an International Day of the United Nations (UN) and resolved that appropriate activities should be held annually in May at the UN Headquarters and other regional UN offices. The Sangha, government and people of Thailand have cooperated to organize activities to celebrate this important day every year, at the local, national and international levels.

In May 2007 (BE 2547), Buddhist leaders from 13 countries were invited to participate in the World Buddhist Leaders' Conference on the International Recognition of the Day of Vesak at Buddhamonthon. An academic conference was also organized on about Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism at Buddhamonthon and the UN Convention Center with the endorsement of the Sangha Supreme Council and the support of the Thai government. The meeting concluded with the joint decision to collaborate to organize the Vesak Day celebrations in Thailand in subsequent years. Following that, in July BE 2547, Thailand and the Thai Sangha organized the Day of Vesak Activities at UN Headquarters in New York City, USA.

From BE2547 (2007) onwards, the Royal Kingdom of Thailand has been playing a very active role in the activities of the United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) through its Supreme Sangha Council, the Royal Government of Thailand, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) by supporting and organizing the International Conference and Celebration of the United Nations Day of Vesak. Except for 2008/BE2551 where the Event was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, this annual Events of the International Conference and Celebration of the United Nations Day of Vesak were held in the Royal Kingdom of Thailand.

With the blessings of the Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand and the sponsorship of the Royal Government of Thailand, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) has been entrusted by the Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand to plan and organize the Event. The Event was also widely supported by the common Buddhists in Thailand but also, all the public and private Sectors

Since BE2547 (2007), the royal Kingdom of Thailand has been organizing the International Conference and Celebration of the United Nations Day of Vesak under the blessings of the Supreme Sangha of Thailand and the sponsorship of the Royal Government of Thailand except for 2008 (BE2551) where the main event was held in Hanoi in Vietnam.

The following were the details of the Event of the International Conference and Celebration of the United Nations Day of Vesak held:

BE2548 (2005)

• The Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand at its 10/2548 Meeting in April 2548, appointed and entrusted Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) as the primary organizer of the Second International Buddhist Conference on the United Nations Day of Vesak for BE 2548 from 18-21 May 2548 at Buddhamonthon and the UN Convention Center under the sponsorship of the Royal Thai Government, with activities associated with the Buddhism Promotion Week at Sanam Luang.

• This Event was successfully concluded achieving its goals and objectives. There were Buddhists representatives from 42 countries at the Event.

• The International Buddhist representatives jointly signed a Declaration recognizing Buddhamonthon, Thailand as the World Center of Buddhism and also to organize the Vesak Day celebration in Thailand, with MCU as the primary organizer

BE2549 (2006)

• The Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand at its 21/2548 Meeting on 9 September BE 2548, entrusted the job of organizing the Third International Conference and Celebration of United Nations Days of Vesak (UNDV) to Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU).

• Objectives: The Event was held in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, as the Royal Patron of Buddhism.

• The International Buddhist Conference of the United Nations Day of Vesak was held on 7 - 10 May 2549 at Buddhamonthon and the UN Convention Center under the sponsorship of the Royal Thai Government.

• The Theme of the Celebration was Contribution to World Peace and Sustainable Development

• Representatives from 48 countries participated in the event and jointly signed a Declaration declaring UN Vesak Day be celebrated in Thailand the following year, in conjunction with the auspicious occasion of the 80th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej

BE2550 (2007)

• With the blessing of the Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) organized the Fourth International Conference and Celebration of United Nations Days of Vesak (UNDV) on 21st to 29th May BE 2550 at Buddhamonthon and the UN Convention Center under the sponsorship of the Royal Thai Government.

• Theme: Buddhist Contribution to Good Governance and Development

• The Event was held in conjunction with the 80th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej of Royal Kingdom of Thailand.

BE2551 (2008)

• The International Organizing Committee (IOC) decided to organize the Fifth International Conference and Celebration of United Nations Days of Vesak in Vietnam.

• With the blessings of the Sangha Council of Vietnam, the Vietnam Buddhist University organized the Fifth International Conference and Celebration of United Nations Days of Vesak held in Hanoi, Vietnam on 13th to 17th May.

• Over 30 IOC members from more than 20 countries including the United States, Australia, Italy, Russia, Japan, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and India attended.

• Theme: Buddhist Contribution to Building a Just, Democratic and Civil Society

• With the main Celebration been held in Hanoi, Vietnam, the Royal Thai government and Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand supported MCU to organize the two-day Event in a smaller scale on May 18 – 19 at the United Nations Convention Center in Bangkok.

• At the meeting of International Organizing Committee (IOC) on 12 September BE 2551 at MCU, the meeting agreed and endorsed that UN Vesak Celebration in BE2552 (2009) be held in the Royal Kingdom of Thailand. • At the same meeting, it was unanimously agreed and endorsed to establish the International Council for the Day of Vesak (ICDV) as an official and a unified organization.

BE2552 (2009)

• At the 21/2551 meeting of the Supreme Sangha Council on 10 November 2551, the Supreme Sangha Council decided that the Royal Kingdom of Thailand to be the host the Sixth International Conference and Celebration of United Nations Days of Vesak in BE2552 (2009).

• The Seventh United Nations Day of Vesak was held in Thailand during 23-25 May B.E 2552/2010 hosted by Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) and co-hosted by Inner Trip Reiyukai (ITRI) of Japan
• Seventy (70) countries attended

BE2554 (2011)

• The Eighth United Nations Day of Vesak was held in Thailand on 12 to 14 May BE 2554 (2011) at the main campus of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and UNCC Hall in Bangkok • In conjunction with the Eighth International Conference and celebration of UN Vesak, a special program was included to celebrate the 84th Birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej of Thailand. Theme: Buddhist Virtues in Socio-Economic Development

BE2555 (2012)

• The Ninth United Nations Day of Vesak was held in Thailand from 31 May to 2 June BE2555 (2012) the main campus of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and UNCC Hall in Bangkok
• This year was a special year as we celebrate the Buddhajayanti year and also the 80th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen and 60th Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the Crown Prince of Thailand
• Theme: The Buddha’s Enlightenment for the Well-being of Humanity
