For Buddhajayanti: The Celebration of 2600 Years of the Buddha's Enlightenment |

The Buddha Jayanti day is a very important occasion in Buddhism. The origin of the term Buddha Jayanti stems from the Pali word 'jaya,' which means victory. This term refers to the complete victory of the Buddha over M?ra and all mental impurities, a victory which enabled the perfectly enlightened Buddha to come into existence. Buddha Jayanti thus refers to both the enlightenment and the coming into existence of the Buddha. In modern times the term Buddha Jayanti is also interpreted as the victory of Buddhism and the victory by individual Buddhists.
If one uses the traditional Thai way of measuring the Buddhist era, the important occasion of 2600 years since the Buddha's enlightenment (Buddha Jayanti) occurs between the Vesak Day of 2554 and the Vesak Day of 2555. The previous Vesak Day of 2554 is considered to mark 2599 years since the Buddha's enlightenment, while this year's Vesak Day of 2555 marks 2600 years since his enlightenment. This calculation is made by determining the beginning of the Buddhist Era as the time of the Buddha's final passing away, and then adding forty-five years, which is the amount of time the Buddha spent teaching after his enlightenment and up to his final passing.
