Dr. William Yaryan received his PhD in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz. As an undergraduate majoring in Philosophy, he was awarded highest honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His doctoral dissertation was on a social movement that saved endangered redwood trees in the first state park in California. Dr. Yaryan is the author of The Sempervirens Story: A Century of Preserving California's Ancient Redwood Forest, 1900-2000. After graduation he taught world, U.S. and California environmental history in addition to environmental philosophy at UC Santa Cruz, and participated in conferences held by the American Society for Environmental History. Prior to his academic career, he worked in the fields of journalism, entertainment public relations, and magazine publishing. Since 2008, Dr. Yaryan has been teaching English in the Faculty of Humanity at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.
